Before I could drive or had a car of my own, I relied on public transport. There were many things I liked about taking the bus everywhere. I could have a glass of wine with lunch and not have to worry about driving home; I could spend the journey listening to music or day-dreaming about my current crush; I could enjoy listening into the conversations of my fellow passengers and imagine where they were going to or what jobs they might have. But the one thing I disliked most about the bus, the thing that brought forth my inner Hulk like nothing else, was Continue reading »

Like a typical Brit, I abhor promoting myself and my work, preferring to let others do it on my behalf. But in today’s economy where the provision of book publicists is offered to only the already successful and well-known, it is incumbent on the rest Continue reading »

I have been tagged by the lovely Susan Elliot Wright to take part in the Lucky Seven game where you go to page 7 or 77 of your WIP, go to line 7 and post the next 7 lines or sentences.
I am juggling far too many projects at one time but have chosen my kid’s novel to post from. So, here are my lines from Jimmy Gingerbeard, a Glaswegian pirate and nanny par excellence!
His mum would go mental if she saw the mess Jimmy was making in her kitchen. He began picking up the cans and lined them up on the counter.
“You can’t go around making this sort of mess. Mum would go crazy if she saw you throw all this food on the floor,” Billy scolded Jimmy.
“Aarrr, you has to make a bit of mess when you’re cooking. Haven’t you heard the saying? You can’t make an omelette without breaking eggs. Ooh, eggs!” Jimmy headed back to the fridge to see if he could find some. He took out a new box of six eggs, removing two before throwing the rest over his shoulder as he headed for the frying pan.
Oh dear! What will Billy do? Jimmy is making rather a mess of Billy’s mum’s pristine kitchen, isn’t he?
Now, for the seven other writers I want to tag in the game.

Many thanks to everyone who took the time to read the interview with Vanessa Gebbie and leave a comment to enter the draw to win a paperback copy of her wonderful book, The Coward’s Tale.
I used Raffle King to pick the winner at random and am delighted to announce that the lucky recipient of the book is… Continue reading »

This is the second of my guilty pleasures.
A baby boy survives a plane crash in the jungle and is brought up by a wise, talking ape (voiced by John Cleese). Years later, an American socialite comes to the jungle to escape her overbearing fiance and when George and Ursula meet, they fall in love. Ursula takes Continue reading »

The film opens with elderly priest Father Merrin on an archeological dig in Iraq where he finds a demonic statue. Meanwhile, in Washington D.C. an actress has rented a house with her daughter Reagan while she works on a movie. Strange things begin happening in the house: there are noises in the attic, presumed to be rats and at a dinner party, Reagan comes downstairs and urinates on the carpet. Her worried mother takes her to hospital where she undergoes Continue reading »

This is the first guilty secret I’m revealing during the A to Z Challenge. I love this film and I refuse to apologise for it.
In 1995 John Spartan is imprisoned for recklessness in duty, causing the death of a busload of children. His quarry, Simon Phoenix (Wesley Snipes) is also imprisoned. But this is no ordinary prison. This new form of cryo-prison means Continue reading »
