I’m Still Here

2016 has been a dreadful year for many of us. It seems that everyone has lost an idol: so many stars of the entertainment world have left us with naught but their ghosts on screen and whispered songs on our radios. Many of us have lost someone in real life. Several of my friends have lost a family member this year, some as the culmination of a long illness, some taken suddenly. Their loss has been great either way. The world has been an ugly place: wars, terrorism, civil unrest, earthquakes, floods. In the UK we had a disappointing result in the Brexit referendum and in the USA, well, Trump. I’m still trying to process that one. Many of us have had poor health, myself included. There have been times when the prospect of never being well has been too much to bear...

Last Rant Of The Year

I know I did my final 2014 post a couple of days ago, but I’m in a bit of a strop so I’m going to make you lot suffer too. What is New Year? A chance to reflect on our successes of the past twelve months? An opportunity to reflect on our mistakes and make changes so as not to repeat them? Illness played a big part in the shittiness. I’ve felt well for about….maybe six weeks in total. The rest has been devoted to various levels of pain, exhaustion and fogginess. I had my second tennis elbow operation in April and the arm is still recovering. We moved house, changed our lifestyle totally and I’ve seen my mum only three times since June which is pretty reprehensible. Being ill makes the journey up to Aberdeenshire very difficult – it’s a 600 mile round trip. I miss my daughter who I don’t see anywhere near as much as I’d...

This is written for the same narrator as See Ma Man? I hope you enjoy it. See Ma Resolutions? See me? See New Year’s resolutions? Ah hate them, so ah dae. Every year ah say ah’m no gonnae dae them ony mair, but as sure as a murder oan Eastenders Christmas edition, ah aye end up makin’ a few. Ah mean, efter the excesses o’ Christmas, we aw feel a bit guilty, don’t we? We spend two weeks spendin’ enough money tae keep Greece afloat and sittin oan oor erses, stuffin oor faces wi’ turkey, chocolate and booze. So whit’s the furst resolution we make? Losin’ weight. Ah’m no sayin’ that ah couldny dae wi’ losing a few stone. If ah pit oan a thong it’d split ma erse between two postcodes. And ye canny switch oan the telly withoot seein’ ads fer Weightwatchers, Lighter...
